About
What is Nonviolent Communication (NVC)?
NVC is a simple yet powerful tool that allows us to communicate more effectively, authentically and with more connection. Its founder, psychologist Marshall Rosenberg, called it “speaking peace” and “a language of life.” It provides clarity about what blocks and what enhances communication, both with others and also within ourselves. NVC practice helps us to improve relationships and to navigate difficult conversations.
Becuase it is based on universalities about human beings and being human, NVC is applicable to any area of your life, be it at work, with your family, friends or with yourself. It is successfully used both for personal transformation as well as in a variety of social settings, such as organisations, schools, the justice system (prisons, juvenile centres)...
Course content and structure
We will cover the key aspects of NVC and we will practice and discuss how to incorporate them into your life situations. We will focus on the three elements of the communication dance: listening empathically, speaking authentically and connecting inwardly with mindfulness. The core framework of NVC (4 steps) will be presented and practiced.
This course has a component of self-directed study with the materials I will provide, as well as a component of live calls that meet weekly for 90 minutes. Most students are able to engage with the reading and practice material during the 6 weeks, others focus mostly on doing the calls. My teaching approach during the calls is to vary the kinds of activities and to provide participatory experiences. I enjoy mixing theory and mental-type practice with embodied approaches (even in the online format).
Aims
To gain a foundational understanding of what NVC is and how to use it in your daily life. Topics we will cover:
increasing awareness of our inner world of feelings and motivations,
expressing our needs and longings in a way that they are more likely to be met,
having more connected relationships and conversations,
offering and receiving difficult messages with more clarity and less worry
stopping personalising and gaining perspective on difficult situations,
understanding where others are coming from and what motivates them,
expressing ourselves assertively and with compassion,
being more in control of our reactions
compassion for ourselves and for others
expressing appreciation and celebrating.
Changing habits of behaviour takes time. The material presented needs to be practiced in order for it to make sense and in order for you to learn how to apply it to real-life situations. The specific outcomes will depend on how much you practice, how entrenched your current habits are, etc. I will offer many opportunities and will support you throughout the weeks and this course will give you many ideas about how to start applying NVC to your life and work and continue to practice after the course.
Who is this for?
This course is particularly for you if you want to improve your relationships and understand what goes wrong in communication and how to enhance a peaceful way of being and communicating… AND you are willing to engage in practice and honest self-discovery.
This course is designed for people who are new to NVC and those who seek a review or deepening of the NVC basics and their application to real life situations.
This course is also for you if you are just curious about NVC and want to get a broad overview and some ideas on how to practice it.
Content
We will cover the key aspects of NVC and focus on the three elements of the communication dance: listening empathically, speaking authentically and connecting inwardly with mindfulness. The core framework of NVC (4 steps) will be presented and practiced.
My teaching approach is to vary the kinds of activities and to provide participatory experiences. I will present concepts of NVC philosophy and practice and we will discuss and practice.
I enjoy mixing theory and mental-type practice with embodied approaches (even in the online format). We will break out into small groups to practice with other participants (you can choose not to participate in that aspect of the calls).
How the course works- what you get
Reading and practice materials for reflection before and after calls
4 live calls with me on Sept 28, Oct 5, 12 , 19, 18:00- 21:00 BST
Recordings of each call- no worries if you can't make the live calls
Opportunity to engage with other participants as practice buddies or in groups (outside of class, in your own schedule, a one hour call weekly tends to work well for people)
Email access to me for the duration of the course.
Time Commitment
For a total duration of 5 weeks, I will suggest that you do:
Live session each week (2.5 hours weekly)
1-2 hours of reading and exercises per week
5-10 minutes of self-connection/ mindfulness practice 1-3 times daily
Daily time to reflect on your progress in a journal.
1x 1hour empathy buddy call a week (optional but strongly suggested).
The exercises can be practiced at any time, so don’t stress if you don’t get to everything in the 6 weeks we are together. You can spread it out over a longer period, redo the exercises, etc.
Your engagement and practice will have a huge impact on your understanding and integration of the material- and on how the positive changes you will see. NVC is the kind of discipline that we integrate through experience. Make this course work for you, I will help you do just that. This is the type of course that you can take lightly to get some basic concepts and tips, or you can take very seriously and immerse yourself in the material and practice beyond the suggestions. It is up to you, your needs in this moment and your availability.

Testimonials
I want to thank you for your wonderful teaching!
I'm noticing breakthroughs when I use NVC tools in conversations where I'm able to stay connected and present in difficult situations. Staying centred with self- compassion is helping me lean into the other person's feelings (without taking responsibility for them) and needs. I've been able to ask for someone's truth that was difficult for them to express, giving them a safe place with no judgment to do that. I could also listen to his truth that was difficult for me to hear by giving myself the compassion I needed in the space of one breath.
Thanks again for your wonderful gift.
